Audemars Piguet Montauk Highway – Limited Edition

I surfing around the internet when I first got a glance at the Audemars Piguet Maontauk Highway.  The guy wearing it in the ad was pretty unassuming, but the watch spoke volumes.

I think the size of the watch itself is what really caught my eye.  It has a 44 mm case diameter.  The watch has the personality that you either love or hate.  It’s either obnoxious or ambitious, you take your pick.  With Lebron as the new spokesperson I’m sure that will continue to sway people one way or another.

The origin of the name is after a 100 mile long Montauk Highway that I happen to be familiar with.  it connects Jamaica, Queens to Montauk Point on the south fork of Long Island in the town of East Hampton.

I was immediately drawn to it because of the color scheme.  The chocolate counts and the aqua numbers, hands, counter pointers are brilliant.

Upon closer inspection I noticed there was a date display which is a little dangerous.  Hexagonal watches with exposed screws tend to get gimmicky and a date display I have always felt is not really need since High School.  It is a Luxury sport watch so we will let this pass.

The Watch retails for about $20,000.00.

Dubai being revitalized by Auctions. Bring sexy (& Costly) Back!

Dubai is becoming increasingly popular as an auction venue both for fine artworks and wrist watches.  October saw two major houses holding sales there.  Bonhams staged its one day event at the celebrated Royal Mirage hotel where classic cars, paintings and wrist watches came under the hammer in three separate sessions.  A night at the hotel will cost you about $383 per night.

The watch offerings were mostly recent models with a platinum Audemars Piguet chronograph estimated at $14,000 USD and a platinum A Lange and Sohne hand wound Centre seconds piece being among the highlights.  Then on the 27th of October, Christie’s staged a combined sale of watches and jewelery in Dubai again featuring mainly modern timepieces.

How to Select a Good Dress Watch?

When you are selecting a good dress watch you must be thinking “timeless”.  Less is really more.  Simple and elegant.  Perfect, is something very subtle in a black or white.  Very few sundials and apertures.  You must assume that you will be wearing this watch when you are 75 years old.

THE STRAP

Nothing is more elegant than a leather strap in black, brown or navy.  If you want a little flair then add come Crocodile.

THE MOVEMENT

There’s something reassuringly retro about a watch that utilizes a handcrafted mechanism to keep time.  but Mechanical movements are expensive.  Quality ones start at $1000.00 so if you can’t afford it, go with a quartz movement.

THE SIZE

Chosse a face with a diameter of 37 to 42 millimeters so it doesn’t look too gaudy.  Avoid big numbers or symbols because they look childish.

THE FACE

Look for sapphire crystal, one of the strongest and most scratch resistant face materials.  Choose any metal you like, but keep in mind the rings you wear.  select a gold watch if you wear a gold wedding band.
